Umoya Creations is a London-based charity (registered number 1098189). It was founded by Eugene Skeef to facilitate international projects in cultural exchange and education through music and conflict resolution.
The Udu project was inspired by a ceramic musical instrument called the udu. Eugene Skeef has been using this clay drum in his work for many years now. It attracts attention wherever he takes it. He has wanted to create a special project to promote its qualities for a long time.
The most dramatic effects of the instrument were felt in Eugene’s conflict-resolution and trauma-healing work in Sudan, Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) and Nigeria where he inspired people who had suffered through war. The drum was the central sound in the creative music workshops he ran. One participant in B&H (who is now a workshop leader himself) said its power had caused "explosions in (his) head", which helped release his trauma. In South Africa people are still dealing with the effects of apartheid and want to re-connect with the drum - an instrument that is re-emerging since the abolition of apartheid. The udu is ideal for this sensitive work because its gentle, hypnotic sound creates a calm environment.
B&H, Nigeria, South Africa and the UK will participate in the Udu project because they are all places where Eugene Skeef has worked.
