Umoya is the Zulu word for spirit, breath, life, soul, temperament, wind. The creation of a creative musical ensemble reflecting the spirit of music of diverse cultures has been a dream of Eugene Skeef’s for many years. The opportunity came in July 2003 at the launch of Umoya Creations, the international charity founded by Eugene. A loose-limbed ensemble of musicians from different cultural backgrounds who are also long time friends of Eugene came together to perform at this event. At the end of the concert all the musicians involved felt the group should become a permanent outfit. Umoya ensemble is a band whose members perform all over the world. The current line-up represents the core of Umoya’s make up. From time to time singers and instrumentalists will rotate as the need arises. The musical cultures represented include South Africa, Nigeria, Britain, Ghana, Bosnia Hercegovina and Jamaica. |
