PRESS RELEASE Date: 27.12.06

MAJOR NEW HIGHER EDUCATION INITIATIVE SIGNED FOR OMAN

Oman Education Services and RWTH Aachen University, under the patronage of Her Excellency Dr. Rawya bint Saud Al Busaidia, yesterday signed a major new initiative establishing the Oman-German University of Technology (OGTech), further strengthening the long relationship between Oman and Germany.

OGTech is affiliated to RWTH Aachen, one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious universities and a member of the elite IDEA league (a strategic partnership of research universities with Delft University of Technology, Imperial College London, ETH Zurich and the Paris Institute of Technology). The Oman-German University of Technology will provide a high standard of education and its degrees will be recognised both in Oman and the European Union, thereby providing a wide range of options for the future of graduating students.

RWTH Aachen traditionally nurtures close ties with industry in areas of research and development and the same emphasis will be a key focus of OGTech, ensuring that its students will take their place in contributing to a growing economic and industrial base in Oman. The university’s quest for educational excellence will ensure strong employment prospects either in Oman or internationally.

Initially Bachelor of Science degrees will be offered in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Geosciences, Applied Information and Technology, Regional Management and Tourism, as well as Urban Design and Urban Planning, together with a Pre-University programme to help students develop the necessary knowledge and skills relevant to their chosen studies. Additional programmes, both undergraduate and post graduate (Masters and PhD studies) will be introduced in the near future.

A series of seminars will be held for students graduating from high schools to acquaint them with programmes for which they will be able to apply in March 2007 onwards. The university will welcome its first students at the beginning of the new academic year in September 2007.
